Ted and Tami-Lynn, his wife, has a dilemma. They want a child but Ted has no male appendage, leaving the couple with two solutions, artificial insemination or adoption. After many things (so many things!) goes wrong with the artificial insemination, the couple decided to go to an adoption agency where Ted learns that he is not illegible to adopt a child because he is, by law, a propriety and not a person. The story goes on as Ted, his wife, his best friend John (Mark Wahlberg) and a young lawyer (Amanda Seyfried) goes to court to make Ted an illegible person.
The first film had two things in its advantage, it had good jokes and had an element of surprise, Ted himself! It was that originality that made people like that not always so cute Teddy Bear. The bar was high for Ted 2 and unfortunately, it didn’t do justice to our expectations. The movie wasn’t has funny as the first one, when people laughed, they laughed hard, but the times it really happen were so few and so far between. The film had a more dramatic turn of event then the first one, but the problem was the repetitive kind of jokes. Many gags were use more than once, making us laugh the first time, but only put on a smile the second and third time. Most of the jokes are about stupid things people do or say when they are high, or they are about sex, so on that point it’s pretty much like the first one! Also, they were many awkward parts that broke the mood of the film. I don’t really understand why they put a not funny sequence of a Saturday Night Life sketch, or why the opening scene lasted why too long, watching Ted dance around a cake. For a comedy it is quite long, nearly two hours, so those unnecessary sequences could easily have been cut out without destroying the meaning of the story.
Mark Wahlberg is great, it is the first time that he accepted to play in a sequel, and his acting didn’t disappointed. He his funny, has great mimics, and a lovable character. Amanda Seyfried comes in as the new female lead since Mila Kunis is not is this sequel. She has a great chemistry with Mark Wahlberg, and sometimes brings a balance to the story. Only sometimes because she can be as high as Ted and John! Giovanni Ribisi is back as Donny and he is creepier than ever! If you remember well the first film, it was his character that stole Ted to keep him like he always wanted since he was a child, so it is no surprise in this one that he wants to use to his advance the fact that Ted is not a person but a propriety.
One of the best thing about Ted is the small sequences with celebrities that you would not think would be playing in this kind of movie! I will let you discover who they are, but it was a nice element to add to the story, making us laugh thinking this is nonsense, without over doing it.
You will crack a smile, I don’t doubt that, but you will not laugh hard often, or at least not as often as you expect to. I’ll be honest and say that I had a little bit of high expectations for this film, so maybe this is why I didn’t find it as funny as I thought it would be, and why others may love it.
Should I see it?
Ted 2 is not a bad movie, not at all, but it is not the funniest comedy you will find. Maybe waiting to see it on rental would be better. He may be a Teddy Bear, but Ted is not a good exemple, so it goes without saying that it is not a comedy for young children to watch!
